Jor-El is Superman's biological father, the husband of Lara, and a leading scientist on the planet Krypton before its destruction. Despite a great number of the council members being his dear friends, he failed to convince them of Krypton's fate. Facing charges of insurrection, a prototype spaceship was built for Jor-El's infant son, Kal-El.

Jor-El postulated that his son would survive on Earth looking like a human being. However his dense molecular structure would give him certain abilities that no other human would have. Lara, has reservations about this for fear of Kal-El's adjustment in such a primitive culture. Jor-El promised that no matter what happened, they would always be there to guide Kal-El's destiny on Earth. With that, the spaceship blasted off for Earth and crashlands in Smallville, Kansas.

When Superman turned eighteen, he began hearing voices leading him to the sheltered rocket ship and a glowing green crystal. Clark leaves Smallville and heads north. He is then commanded by the crystal to throw it into a far away plateau of ice. From there, a great crystaline structure is formed where Clark discovers pre recorded holographic messages his father had left for him. Jor-El's essence exists within this 'Fortress of Solitude' to offer guidance and advice to his son.

Marlon Brando (left) played Jor-El in the 1978 film Superman. Russell Crowe (above) portrays Jor-El in 2013's Man of Steel.
