The final beta version of Ubuntu 13.10 available for testing

Ubuntu LinuxOverview of new features

Released the final beta release of Ubuntu 13.10 "Saucy Salamander". The release is scheduled for October 17. The presented test version marked the preparation of ready-made installation iso- images of Ubuntu and Ubuntu Server, which were formed only for daily builds , and intermediate alpha and beta builds were canceled. Finished installation images are also created for Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, Xubuntu, Ubuntu Studio, Edubuntu and Kubuntu.

Separately, you can select the first beta release of Ubuntu Touch assembly for mobile devices with touch screens. Official assembly prepared for smartphones Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 tablets and Nexus 10 . Unofficially develop ports Ubuntu Touch for another 50 portable devices , covering more than 20 brands. The first release of Ubuntu Touch will be released simultaneously with Ubuntu 13.10.

Of the major innovations Ubuntu 13.10 can be noted

  • Integration in the basic components of the display Ubuntu Server Mir patches to X.org, required to work through the graphics stack layer XMir, which is now the default (XMir only works with open source drivers intel, radeon and nouveau, for proprietary and not supported drivers used fallback- mode is based on the conventional X.org). XMir provides tools for running X- Server with the organization of the output through the display server Mir, allowing normal X11- applications and X- server to run on top of Mir. Issues Lubuntu, Xubuntu and Kubuntu as before will be supplied with the graphics stack -based components X.Org, without the intervention of an intermediate layer XMir.

  • In Unity, adds support for smart regions (Smart Scopes), which are server processors , allowing Dash to represent certain types of local or external information to the definition of the order of output areas in terms of relevance and relevance of the user. For example , if you type in the search for "The Beatles" in the first place will be withdrawn from the field of music and video, which will be displayed in the local and external content such as personal cloud storage from the user and from services like Wikipedia, YouTube, Last.fm and Amazon . By default, when you try to search a list of all available Scope- plugins inactive areas marked black-and- white icon. The user may, at its discretion disable and enable the region depending on their preferences.

  • The interface switching tasks Alt + Tab support for select items with the mouse and use the mouse wheel to scroll. Wallpaper is a feature of visual highlight items using a translucent area by pressing the left mouse button and moving the pointer.

  • The redesigned interface is supplied by default PDF- viewer Evince, adds a new toolbar and a new search.

  • Change the look of the music player Rhythmboks.

  • Markedly modified manager log control user activity, allowing selectively purify information about specific events and disable the accumulation of data for selected applications . Added ability to delete all logs of user activity.

  • Added a new indicator for the selection and active keyboard language settings and call.

  • The package includes a virtual onscreen keyboard Onboard, supporting features such as audible indication of depression and an automatic bid relevant variations continue writing.

  • Improved interface file manager Nautilus, in particular to ensure proper display of buttons on the toolbar.

  • In the installer added an extra step to set up your account in the cloud service Ubuntu One.

  • Kubuntu: the transition to KDE 4.11; involvement of Muon Discover a new application to search for and install software , a new simplified interface to manage users in the system , support for configuring wireless installation phase, a new application for a chat on the basis of KDE Telepathy 0.6.2; new applet configure network connections.

  • Ubuntu GNOME: involved desktop environment GNOME 3.8 ( 13.04 delivered to GNOME 3.6); given the opportunity to select a session with the implementation of the classic desktop in the style of GNOME 2, stopped delivery of applications Ubuntu Online Accounts, instead of which involved regular management accounts GNOME.

  • Xubuntu: a new version of the configurator xfce4-settings to configure the new interface monitors, added to the repository application gtk-theme-config to quickly change themes, a new set of Gtk- by -enabled Gtk3.8; supply added to the package apt-offline, allowing simplify access to repositories in low-speed or intermittent network connection.

  • Lubuntu: the involvement in the default browser instead of Firefox Chromium; not supplied XScreensaver; ability to use technology ZRam ( placed in the RAM block device where the message is swapped with compression); update design elements ( icons, wallpaper, etc.).

  • The Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.11.

  • Upstart init system has been updated to version 1.10, which includes support for components upstart-file-bridge and upstart-local-bridge to link the work to the events associated with changes in the file system or connection to a local socket. The structure includes a tool upstart-monitor for visual monitoring of the flow of events in the Upstart.

    Lubuntu willl NOT ship Mir

LubuntuLubuntu project refused to use the graphics stack-based Mir / XMir

Following the Kubuntu developers participants based on the shell LXDE Lubuntu branch decided not to go to the graphic stack, based on the display server Mir. At least issues Lubuntu 13.10 and 14.04 will be shipped with the previously used graphics stack-based components X.Org, without the intervention of an intermediate layer XMir.

As a reason for not switching to Mir called the need to ensure the performance and hardware support that is acceptable for low-power systems. In the case of Mir OpenBox window manager would have to be replaced by a compositing window manager, and use the additional link XMir in the process of drawing. Recall that the company Canonical has decided to use the default Mir with a layer XMir already in the next issue of Ubuntu 13.10, considering that officials and the branch will also move to the new stack.

At present, work Mir / XMir marked as stable enough for inclusion in the release of Ubuntu, however the work on optimizing the performance is not yet complete, and there are some technical limitations such as the need for additional buffering stage through the use of an intermediate layer XMir. Conducted resource Phoronix tests show that the configuration of the Unity + XMir + Mir while running noticeably slower than running on top of X-Unity server. The failure of performance occurs when starting the modern 3D-applications, as well as in the performance of classical 2D-tests.

Display server Mir in Ubuntu 13.10

Ubuntu LinuxThe company Canonical has decided to go to Mir by default in Ubuntu 13.10

Oliver Ries, who served as Director of Product Development Unity and Mir in the company Canonical, Ubuntu announced the transition to the use of the default display server Mir starting with the next release of Ubuntu 13.10, scheduled for October this year.

The rapid progress in the distribution of Mir explained intention supply a graphical environment based on Mir in the LTS-release Ubuntu 14.04, which requires additional stabilization technology in at least one intermediate release distribution.

In a situation of unavailability Mir by the time Ubuntu 13.10, the introduction of this technology in the desktop version of the distribution had to be postponed at least a year, before the release of Ubuntu 14.10, or decide on the issue of raw LTS-release, which is unacceptable for the implementation of plans to push editorial Ubuntu Touch, focused on use on tablets and smartphones. The first phones based on Ubuntu Touch is expected early next year, Canonical spur the transition to a single code base that forms the environment for different classes of devices (from smart phones to PCs), a wide range of screen resolution and system input (keyboard / mouse, touch screen , the remote control).

Development Mir is progressing quite rapidly, including Canonical constantly expands staff involved in the development of the project staff, which gives reason to believe that Mir will be brought to fully operational and stable states in the coming months. Moreover, according to Oliver Rice is now Mir has already met the criteria of quality and performance requirements for components are included in the release. Currently available for testing a prototype shell Unity 8, running on top of Mir, and also implemented the ability to run all the popular desktop environments using layer XMir. Instructions for running Mir in the current test builds of Ubuntu 13.10 can be found in this article.

In order to solve the problem of testing Mir before switching to release long-term support (LTS) and it does not disrupt the operation of the system, a compromise solution - Mir will be used by default, but a graphical desktop environment Unity will still use the X-server (in the distribution will ship to the default Unity 7). X.Org-server interaction and Mir will be based on the interlayer XMir, providing coverage of the input and output between Mir and the X-server (in fact XMir acts as a replacement driver input and output).

There will also be a special fallback-mode that allows you to organize the work without the intervention of Mir using conventional drivers X.Org. Fallback-mode will be applied in case of the lack of support in the graphics card Mir or install proprietary drivers, NVIDIA and AMD. Despite the fact that the support of Mir in the proprietary driver is not yet implemented, NVIDIA and AMD are going to provide similar support for the release of Ubuntu 14.04. In Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will continue to be used XMir, but support fallback-mode will be terminated. Starting with Ubuntu 14.10 distribution will fully switch to a graphical stack-based Mir and Unity 8, without the use of an additional layer.

In developing the community of official editions Ubuntu, such as Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Ubuntu GNOME, etc., their work is also planned to organize on the basis of a single graphics stack with Ubuntu-based Mir and XMir. Support XMir will be implemented over five years under the LTS-release 14.04. The above statement Canonical representative disagrees with the statement project leader Kubuntu, who pointed out that this edition will not use the Mir and XMir, and relies on Wayland.
