The term Hockeytown is used throughout the United States and Canada to identify any town, city or community that has a history and reputation of participating in hockey. Among the cities are Binghamton, NY, Buffalo, NY, Detroit, MI, Philadelphia, PA, Saint Paul, MN and Warroad, MN.

The Detroit Red Wings began using the term in a marketing campaign in 1996.

How the Red Wings were named

James Norris purchased the Detroit Falcons in 1932 and renamed the club after an amateur hockey club he once played for, the Montreal Winged Wheelers. He chose a winged wheel as the teamís logo, to reflect Detroit being the centre of the emerging automobile industry.
