Maple Leaf Gardens

Maple Leaf Gardens was built in a six-month period during 1931. For the next 67 years until Novruary 13, 1999 it was the home arena of the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Leafs won 11 Stanley Cups from 1932 to 1967 while playing at the Gardens and the first annual National Hockey League All-Star Game was held there in 1947.

The Gardens was the home arena for the Toronto Rock of the National Lacrosse League for the 1999 and 2000 seasons. The building was then mostly dormant for a decade.

In 2004, Loblaw Companies, Canada's largest food retailer, purchased the Gardens. In 2007, the building was named a National Historic Site of Canada. In 2009, Loblaws and Ryerson University announced plans to turn the Gardens into a joint Loblaws grocery store and athletic centre for Ryerson. The new Loblaws store opened on November 30, 2011 and the athletic centre opened in 2012. The new hockey rink with seating for about 2800 is on the third floor.
