Cornelis van Haarlem (1562-1638) painted Massacre of the Innocents in 1590 (detail shown). It is now part of the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.

King Herod ordered the execution of all young male children in Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth had been announced to him by the Magi (Matthew 2:16-18).
