Matthias Stom (c.1600 – after 1652) was born in the Utrecht area but spent most of his artistic life in Italy. Esau and Jacob was painted in the 1640s and is now in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.
Returning home one day, the exhausted Esau caught the scent of a lentil dish that his younger twin brother Jacob had prepared. Esau asked Jacob to give him some but Jacob said he would only if Esau relinquished his birthright to him. Without much consideration, he gave up these rights, which did not seem very crucial to him.
