Anglican Church of Australia

The Anglican Church of Australia was the largest Christian denomination in Australia until the 1986 census, when the Catholic Church surpassed it. The church has its origins in the Church of England in Britain. The British government appointed the first chaplain who arrived in Australia in 1788. In 1825 the Australian continent was proclaimed an Archdeaconry of the Diocese of Calcutta; in 1836 the Diocese of Australia came into being.

Beginning in 1872 representatives from all over the country have met for national dialogue at the General Synod. Since 1962, the Australian church has been headed by its own primate. The church now consists of twenty-three dioceses arranged into five provinces (except for Tasmania).

Shown left is detail from a stained glass window in St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, NSW.
