Golden Age of Comics

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman's first appearance took place in All Star Comics in 1941. Her success was strong enough that she was made the lead story in the new Sensation Comics in January 1942. In the summer of 1942, Wonder Woman was given her own comic, but she appeared frequently in Comic Cavalcade as well. Since then, the Wonder Woman title has been published by DC Comics almost continuously except for a brief hiatus in 1986.

Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston (1893-1947) who received a Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University. DC Comics publisher Max Gaines hired Marston as an Educational Consultant. Marston wrote the first Wonder Woman comic which was drawn by Harry G. Peter. Marston had intended the character be called "Suprema" but editor Sheldon Mayer replaced that name with "Wonder Woman."
