Vintage football autograph collectors
I call it chasing the grim reaper--and I've been doing it now for 20 years. So many of those who have played in football's colorful past are dying without writing down or recording their stories. Lately I've been interviewing as many as are willing to be recorded. It is very rewarding. Although the importance of documenting their history is intrinsically valuable, it is heartwarming to be able to give them a copy of the interview that they can share with their children and grandchildren. I know there are autograph collectors who are obsessively driven to acquire the autographs of old-time footballers. Not all collectors may have the skills necessary to conduct good interviews. However I think more collectors could play a part in this aspect than are presently doing. I think a good interviewer is one who is passionate and knowledgeable about the subject and can get the interview going with a simple good question and then get out of the way and let the interviewee tell his own story. In other words, don't ask a lot of questions until the end.
