Roberta Elizabeth Tilton

Roberta Elizabeth Tilton In 1885, Roberta Elizabeth Tilton founded the Women's Auxiliary, an organization which later became the Anglican Church Women.

Roberta was born in Maine and raised as a Unitarian, but after several years of consideration and prayer, became an Anglican. In 1868 she and her husband Colonel John Tilton (from New Brunswick) moved to Ottawa and joined St. John's parish. She directed a large share of her time to Church work, teaching Sunday School, working in the Orphan's Home and the National Council of Women of Canada.

In 1885 Roberta with a group of women came up with the idea of a national organization for Anglican women in support of the Board of Foreign and Domestic Missions. Along with the other ladies Roberta presented her proposal to the bishops of the Canadian Church and with bishop's approval the Women's Auxiliary was launched. Under Roberta's wise and prayerful guidance the new organization prospered and at her retirement from its General Board twenty three years later there were diocesan and parochial branches right across Canada.
