Back to Church Sunday

Back to Church Sunday began in the Church of England in 2004 in the Diocese of Manchester. On a designated Sunday, every parishioner in the diocese was encouraged to extend an invitation to a friend, colleague, neighbour, or family member to join them in church. The movement has caught on, and now takes place in churches across denominations in countries around the world.

This year, Back to Church Sunday is on September 25.

That Poverty Project

In That Poverty Project, Sean Krausert experiences 3 aspects of poverty experiences to bring awareness to poverty issues. The 3 poverty experiences are:
  • Homelessness Currenly, Sean is living in a sparsely equipped tent. He will only eat, bathe, wash clothes, and tend to his personal needs like one would do who lives on the streets.
  • Working Poor For 3 months, Sean will live with a budget of $7.50 per day to cover all of his needs.
  • Hunger For 3 months, using World Food Programme rations as the guide, Sean will eat only his allotted portion each day.

Iqaluit Cathedral's Cross and Steeple Erected

St. Jude's Cathedral, Iqaluit which was destroyed in November 2005 in a fire set by an arsonist is now being rebuilt. Last month, after travelling more than 2,000 kilometres to Iqaluit from Ottawa, the cross and steeple were affixed. They arrived by sealift, an ocean ship that travels to Nunavut from southern Canadian ports in the summer months and carries bulk goods, and oversized and specialty items that canít be flown in by plane. About $4.8 million has been raised and spent on constructing the foundation, shell, steeple, cross and doors of the cathedral. The inside will require another $2.5 million for plumbing, flooring, electrical wiring and drywall.

St. Matthew's Winnipeg Redevelopment

With a dwindling congregation, Saint Matthew's Anglican Church, Winnipeg has decided the large volume under its beautiful wood ceiling would best serve its community as new affordable housing.

A plan has been developed to construct a modern, four-storey apartment building inside the shell of the church. Twenty-four residential units and a smaller worship area for the congregation are focused around a grand internal courtyard that will function as a social space for the residents.
