Christ among the Doctors by Bernardino Luini

Christ among the Doctors by Bernardino Luini

Bernardino Guini (1480?-1532) was influenced by Leonardo da Vinci and many of his paintings including Christ among the Doctors have been taken in the past to be originals by Leonardo. The National Gallery, London acquired the painting in the 1831 Howell Carr Bequest.

In Jesus' youth, he went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem at Passover. When Mary and Joseph were searching for him on the return journey, they found him in the Temple, discussing matters with the scribes and astounding them with insightful questions. Christ was supposedly twelve years old but he seems more mature in Luini's panel.

Raising of Lazarus by Sebastiano del Piombo

Raising of Lazarus by Sebastiano del Piombo

Raising of Lazarus was painted by Sebastiano del Piombo (1485?-1547) in Rome 1517-1519. It is in the National Gallery, London, purchased with the Angerstein Collection in 1824.

Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, had already been dead for four days when Jesus arrived. Jesus awoke Lazarus and he stepped out of his tomb, still wrapped in burial cloth. It is the greatest miracle that Jesus performs in the New Testament. Jesus said to Martha:

"I am the resurrection and the life. Those who believe in me, even though they die, will live."
