Sorel's Renovated Rectory
Last month, Bishop Barry Clarke inaugurated the renovated Christ Church rectory, Sorel, Quebec. The rectory, built in 1843, now houses a community hall, kitchen, offices and small apartments. It is intended that the rectory will serve the community at large as well as the congregation.
Christ Church, founded in 1784, is the oldest Anglican parish in Quebec, but by the 1990s it had dwindled to about five regular worshippers as the anglophone population declined. In 1999, the Anglican diocese of Montreal chose the historic parish as the site for a new initiative: to develop a French ministry. As part of the mission the church bought back the rectory in 2004, which the congregation had sold in 1968. 12 volunteers raised money and planned the $500,000 renovation, partly funded by Quebec's religious-heritage foundation.
