The Finch and The Cardinal

by Lisa Earnest

On my 2nd story patio hangs a gourd filled with seed. I love to sit and watch the flurry of visitors my feeder attracts. The gourd hangs on black line multiplied for durability. The black capped chickadee prefers the line or the patio railing. The finches are very possessive of the feeder. They claim it as their own. With boldness they dominate the feeder for extended periods of time.

Then there are the cardinals, the lovely red bird spotted easily by its brightness and beauty. I call them the bottom feeders. They walk along the patio scraping the bits left behind by others. At first they just appeared to be shy. As I watched the beautiful and bold bird eat below the others, my first thought was humility. Upon deeper evaluation, I can see a bird that is an awesome creation of God. It's feathers are so brilliant and my favorite color happens to be red so this is among my favorite of birds. Why does it insist on eating below it's obvious value?

Watching the birds got me to thinking. I wonder, how often God views His children in such a way. As some of us hang our heads in the shame of our pasts, failing to see ourselves as the beautiful creation that we are, as we scurry among the lows of life. Do we lack confidence to be our all? Are we held back by some addiction or past regrets? Are we waiting until we "get it all together" before we make our move? Is God calling we cardinals to be more like the finch?

So you are no longer a slave but a son, and if you are a son, then you are also an heir through God (Galatians 4:7)

I am a Spirit filled believer, wife, mother, and survivor of much. I write for self expression and outlet but am often told my writing is an inspiration to others. I continue to write from my heart in hopes to somehow be a blessing to someone else. Website: Loving Mind Expressions
