St George's Anglican Church, Guelph, Ontario

St George's Anglican Church, Guelph, OntarioGuelph, Ontario is in south-central Ontario, 96km west of Toronto and 28km east of Kitchener-Waterloo. John Galt, a Scottish novelist, who was superintendent of the Canada Company, founded Guelph as a planned town in 1827.

St. George's Anglican Church was established 175 years ago. The present St. George's Church was constructed on the bank of the Speed River in 1873. It is the third site for the St. George's congregation (two previous churches were located in the heart of St. George's Square).

Henry Langley designed this stone building in a rustic English Gothic Revival style. The spire was oriented to offer an impressive vista when viewed from St. George's Square down Douglas Street. It is equally impressive from all angles. Its patterned slate roof, stained glass windows and a carillon of 23 bells from England, a gift donated by Arthur Cutten, also distinguish the church building.

Anglican Church Reimbursed for Residential School Payout
A revised Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement, that came into effect in September, reduces the amount the Anglican Church needs to pay to former students from $25 million to $15.7 million. The church has submitted a report to the federal government showing how much compensation it has already paid out and will receive a reimbursement within a couple of months. The bulk of the monies to be reimbursed by the government will go to the General Synod.

At the end of 2001, the Diocese of Cariboo in British Columbia was forced into bankruptcy after years of settling residential school abuse claims. The churches in the former diocese now operate as the Anglican Parishes of the Central Interior.

Church-run, government-funded residential schools for native children were supposed to prepare them for life in white society instead hundreds of natives alleged physical and sexual abuse and sued the church and the federal government. In 1931, at the peak of the residential school system, the Anglican Church operated 26 of the 80 residential schools. The Roman Catholic Church operated most of the other schools while Presbyterians and United Church operated the rest. All 4 denominations were sued.

The average compensation for former students was $25,000. The revised agreement allows former students who have still not settled to file for abuse claims and receive compensation of up to $275,000. The federal government will pay 100 per cent of outstanding claims.

Jumbo and St Thomas, Ontario
Jumbo Statue, St Thomas, Ontario

On September 15, 1885, Jumbo, the giant African Elephant, star of the Barnum & Bailey Circus, met an untimely death when struck in St Thomas, Ontario by a Grand Trunk locomotive. St Thomas erected the monument pictured in 1985.

The village of St Thomas was established in about 1810 and the first Anglican Church built between 1822 and 1824. That church, Old St Thomas Church, has been restored and is available for rent for weddings and other events. Two, still active Anglican churches, Trinity Church and St John's Anglican, St Thomas, Ontario were built about a decade before Jumbo was struck. The other Anglican Church in the city, originally St. Hilda's now called St Hilda's-St. Luke's is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. The St Luke's congregation, established 90 years ago, merged with St Hilda's, which allowed the newer building to be renovated and a chapel added.

St Jude's Cathedral, Iqaluit

St Jude's Cathedral, IqaluitSt. Jude's, the Cathedral of the Diocese of the Arctic, (seen in 1995 photo) was structurally damaged by an arson fire November 5, 2005 and as a result had to be demolished in 2006.

On June 3, 2007, on the site of St. Jude's in Iqaluit, a groundbreaking ceremony took the first steps to rebuild the cathedral. The original building, completed in 1972, was built to resemble an igloo and the new cathedral will retain the familiar igloo shape of its predecessor.

The cost of the new Cathedral is estimated to be $5.7 million. The Diocese of the Arctic received approximately $770,000 towards reconstruction from the insurance and is making an appeal both within and beyond the borders of the Arctic, and both within and beyond the borders of the Anglican denomination, to raise the additional funds needed.
