Living in Light of God's Love

by Nathan Gibbs

As the song writer describes in his song, "Nor could the scroll contain the whole," the love of God is something that no matter how much is written, more can always be said about God's amazing love. I recently was reminded of God's great love from a passage of Scripture found in Romans 8:31-32:

"What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?" (KJV)

As I walk the Christian life, I often forget from day to day how deeply God loves me. It is easy to forget how that God loves us personally and eternally the same everyday, and even more amazing the lengths that God will go to show us His love. Every Christian easily comprehends the demonstration of God's love to the world through the work of Jesus Christ by His Crucifixion. Certainly that is enough to merit our attention towards God's eternal love and no one would argue that God sending His only Son to die on our behalf does not prove how majestic God's love is. Yet in spite of Christ's death on the cross, we find ourselves questioning God's love towards us from time to time. We tend to view the Crucifixion as a one time display of God's love fully realized at salvation when we accept Him as Lord, but forget that God loves us the same everyday as He did when Christ died for us.

This is what our passage here in the apostle Paul's epistle to the Romans expounds. God's love is the same everyday. He loves us with the same intensity, the same greatness, the same vastness and the same eternality and He exhibits this love towards us hourly, daily, and yearly. God is not our enemy for the work of Christ on the Cross reconciled us to God. Therefore if God is willing to sacrifice His only begotten Son, then imagine what great lengths God strives for in loving us freely and giving us all things as the Bible explains. This means God is willing to do whatever it takes for His children.

But yet we still doubt God's love and why? It is because we search for it in all the wrong ways. Think of all that we experience throughout the day. Spend some time counting your blessings and all things God has given to you in addition to Salvation. Ponder on all the events that do or do not occur. Meditate on your behavior, your thoughts and habits displayed everyday. If we consider the complexity of life as we live it, then we can find God's great love demonstrated continuously. I recently experienced this as I felt my heart wanting to stray from God with a rebellious attitude. I was tired of fighting temptations and wanted to allow myself to indulge in the fruits of the flesh, but thankfully God would not let me go and I found myself constrained by His great love. God saves us all for a purpose to become more like Jesus Christ and glorify Him and then God will do what it takes to complete the work He has started because His love demands it. If God is willing to spare His Son, then He does not take a second thought in sacrificing our health, our possessions, and even the people we love because through it all God is demonstrating His wondrous love. May God help us all to live our Christian life in the light and the knowledge of God's amazing love.

I want to encourage others with what God is teaching me every day.
