The Crucifixion of Saint Peter

Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571–1610) painted The Crucifixion of Saint Peter in 1601. It is in the Cerasi Chapel, Santa Maria del Popolo, Rome.

St. Peter labored in Rome during the last portion of his life and was martyred in Rome under Nero in 64AD. Tradition says he was crucified with his head downwards as depicted in Caravaggio's painting.

The painting shows Martha in the act of converting her sister Mary from her life of pleasure to the life of virtue in Christ.

Samson Captured by the Philistines by Guercino

Delilah revealed to the Philistines that Samson would lose his superhuman strength if his hair were cut. When Samson was asleep, his hair was cut off and the Philistines were able to take Samson prisoner as a defenceless man (see Judges 16:4-20).

Guercino painted Samson Captured by the Philistines in 1619.   It is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.   More Paintings by Guercino

Martyrdom of St Stephen by Annibale Carracci

Stephen was the first martyr who died for his belief in Jesus.   He was condemned to death by the Jewish High Council for blasphemy.   Stephen was hurried outside the Jerusalem city walls and stoned to death.

Christ Driving the Traders from the Temple by El Greco

Jesus drove from the Temple the traders and moneychangers who, by long-established custom, had been allowed to transact business in the outer court (Mark 11:15-19).

Christ Driving the Traders from the Temple was painted by Domenikos Theotokopoulos, called El Greco (1541-1614). He made several versions of this subject, this one was presented to the National Gallery, London by Sir J. C. Robinson in 1895.
