Sainte-Marie Among the Hurons

Ste Marie among the Hurons block house and canalSainte-Marie Among the Hurons, Midland, Ontario is a reconstruction of the 1640s Jesuit mission.

French Jesuit missionaries came to the region in the 1620s to convert the Huron to Christianity and founded a mission in 1639. In 1648, the Iroquois attacked the mission, captured, tortured and killed Jesuit missionaries Jean de Brébeuf, Antoine Daniel and Gabriel Lalemant, and massacred the Hurons. The following year the last Hurons and Jesuits adandoned the mission.

The reconstruction of the village, church and longhouses was undertaken by the Ontario government in 1964. On the opposite side of the road is the Martyrs' Shrine, dedicated to the missionaries killed, built in 1926 and operated by the Jesuits.

Project Ploughshares

Project Ploughshares is an ecumenical agency of the Canadian Council of Churches established in 1976 to implement the churches' call to be peacemakers and to work for a world in which justice will flourish and peace abound.

The agency's name is derived from Isaiah 2:4

"and they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation; neither shall they learn war any more."

Same Sex Blessings

Anglican Communion is a worldwide fellowship of national and regional churches in communion with the Church of England. With 540 dioceses throughout the world, the total membership of the churches, including the Episcopal church in the United States, is approximately 73 million. The Anglican Communion as a whole does not allow same sex marriage ceremonies to take place in church. However, in recent years this policy has been changed in a few dioceses.

In Canada, a Theological Commission issued a report that argues that the blessing of same sex unions was not against the core doctrine of the Anglican Church. Canadian Allan Pearson in his article A Perspective on Same Sex Blessings disagrees. He says that Marriage, along with the Eucharist, are in fact the 2 core doctrines taught directly by Jesus Christ. Marriage is an Act of God, in which God himself joins a man to his wife.

Comments on Allan Pearson's article can be made on the Same Sex Blessings Blog.

During a visit to the retirement home, I asked the director, "How do you determine whether or not a person should be institutionalized?"

"Well," said the Director, "We fill up a bathtub, and then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub."

"Oh, I understand," I said. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup."

"No," said the Director. "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"
