Site Outage This Friday
In case you missed the alert in your My Account page, there is a site outage scheduled for Friday 29 May 2009 from 1:00 - 6:00 PM PDT.

We apologize for any convenience this may cause, and thank you for your patience as we make some necessary changes to our servers. Please note that this is merely routine maintenance and has nothing to do with the recent transfer of GeoCities sites to the all-new free WebRing Webspace. The site should be up and running better than ever by the time our techs finish their task.

Reporting Site Host Closures

Guest Post by WebRing Super-user genessa

By now y'all know GeoCities is to be no more, and this is big... lots and lots of WebRing members have their websites hosted on GeoCities. Plenty of you no longer do, having moved to another free host, including (maybe even mainly) WebRing's Webspace.

It is smaller news, to be sure, when other free website hosts go belly-up, but it does happen and it does affect some WebRing members. Having just learned that another host is in the process of biting the dust, I thought it would be a good idea to keep track of the late and great (or tiny) all in one spot.  So let this be the spot!

  • AOL Hometown kissed its members goodbye without waking them up and crept out the kitchen window on October 31, 2008.
  • Free Home Pages, which included usapages.com, allowed its domain registrations to expire without fuss in early April.
  • MSN Groups also quietly shuttered its doors late in 2008.
  • AspHost4Free announced "By May 22, 2009, all sites hosted by [us] will be no longer available."

Know of any others, recent or upcoming?  Leave a comment below this post with that news, please. Let's keep everyone in the loop. And of course, if any of these defaulters was YOUR website's home, don't be homeless... move to WebRing's Webspace!

Over 800 New Webspaces
Since announcing the all-new free Webspace, we now have over 800 Webspaces set up. Facilitating this surge of sites is the news that Yahoo! is poised to close GeoCities.

Most Ring Managers can attest to how devastating this closure will have for their ring members. In the late 1990's, GeoCities owned WebRing. As a result, a great many sites here on WebRing were hosted at GeoCities.

We have taken a pro-active approach to addressing this issue. Our staff is poring through lists of registered GeoCities URLs and determining if they even exist anymore. Many do, and we are contacting those affected members to let them know that we're here to help.

Within one week, 800 sites have been transferred and as a result, members who haven't been on WebRing for years are back. Here are a few of the sites that have been transferred.
You can find the complete directory of Webspaces here. (You can even search for sites within the directory - a first here on WebRing.)

Even though we're working double time to make sure these folks know about the closure, we ask for your help. If you're a Ring Manager, contact your affected members. If you're a member, let all your friends, family and colleagues who have a GeoCities site now that they can move their site to their free Webspace.

Remember, even folks who aren't already WebRing members can sign up and receive their own free Webspace. To learn more, click here

Transfer Your GeoCities Sites to WebRing Webspace Today
Since announcing the launch of the all-new free WebRing Webspace, over 1360 members have configured their Webspace, more than 200 are using their personal storage, and over 105 members are taking advantage of their Webspace usage.

And the numbers are growing!

Help Us Test the Site Migration Utility

To help ease the cumbersome task of moving your GeoCities site over to your Webspace, our techs have put together a nifty little tool.

The Site Migration Utility is successfully moving over 99% of member sites to their Webspace. In most cases, 100% of site content is being successfully transferred and recreated!

Is the Service Free?

It sure is! Of course, your site migration will require a few corrections once the site has been moved. Most corrections are simple, most involve replacing images copyrighted by the previous site host or repairing links. If you're not comfortable making such corrections, however, we will help you fix the errors for a small fee.

How Can You Use the Utility?

As we're currently still in the testing phase, you need to contact us at membership ((at)) webring ((dot)) com. Make the subject line "GEOCITIES." We'll then write you back to request the information we need to migrate your site.

This utility is currently being used to address those members who are about to lose their GeoCities site; however, we will also work with those who would like to migrate their Angelfire or Tripod site over to their ad-free Webspace.

Once we have all the bugs worked out, we'll be adding the ability to migrate nearly any site to your Webspace to your My Account page.

Check Out All the New Webspaces

At the bottom of every WebRing page, you'll now find a link to open the all-new WebRing Webspace Directory.

On this page, you'll find lists of Recent Arrivals, Featured, and Sponsored Webspaces. You can also find quick links to questions you might have regarding the use of Webspaces and member testimonials. You can check it here.

Here are a couple sites that have already moved over to their new home on WebRing Webspace:

Move Your GeoCities Site Today!

We highly encourage you not to wait until the last minute to migrate your GeoCities site, even if you choose not to take advantage of your free Webspace. Contact us today to save your GeoCities site: membership ((at)) webring ((dot)) com / Subject: GEOCITIES

WebRing Wants You... To Recruit New Members!
Do you love WebRing? Then invite your friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances to join you here!

For the entire month of May, we are increasing how much you can earn for successfully inviting new members

Your Personal Invitation Page

Invitations from someone you know are generally better received than generic ones. That's why we've activated personal invitation landing pages.

Anytime you invite someone to join WebRing, they will be sent to your personal invitation page. On this page, you can supply a custom welcome message that directly addresses the people you've invited.

To customize your personal invitation page message, open the "Profile Settings" tab of your My Account page. On the page that opens, you'll find a text field to enter your custom message. Remember to click the "Apply Changes" button when you're done.

How to Invite Members

The invitation process is simple. You have two main options for sending invites:

The "Invite!" Link
At the top of every WebRing page, you will find a red link labeled "Invite!" Click that link to start the invitation process. Remember that you must be signed in to make sure you get credit for inviting new members.

Your Own Email Account
Possibly the best way to make sure your friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances get your invitation is to send your invites from an email they recognize. To ensure that you get credit for any sign-ups, simply attach this link in the email you send them:

http://www.webring.com/profile?y=insertyourWRIDhere;join

Links on Your Website
A third passive option is to add a link on your website, blog, or anywhere else you want to your personal invitation landing page.

Whichever method you choose, you will receive credit for any new sign ups who come through your personal landing page.

Make the Jackpot Grow!

To add some excitement to this invitation drive, we thought it would be fun to create a progressive jackpot of sorts. The way it works is simple: the more new members who sign up, the greater the final amount of awarded Activity Points will be.

The pot starts at a generous 400 AP, and we will award a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. As the pot grows, so will the number of winners with 4th, 5th, and 6th place winners incrementally added.

The overall winner will earn massive amounts of Activity Points!

Additionally, we plan to randomly select winners of weekly prizes. These prizes may be AP or something from the Rewards Room. You never know what you'll win!

And of course, you will receive a monetary reward for any member who joins via your invitation. For details, see our affiliate information page.

What are you waiting for? Start inviting new WebRing members today!
