Understanding Keyword’s
Some people say, oh that’s easy I know that, but
there are many more who just find the thought of learning about keywords a SEO absolutely
terrifying. If you already know about keywords, you may want to skip to the end
of this post for some handy keyword tools.
Some marketers, and I include myself in this category,
have used terms such as "keywords" and "keyword phrases" as
if they're part of everyone's vocabulary. So if I’ve used these words before
and you had no idea what I was talking about, then I apologise.
This post will help the emerging marketer grasp the
concept of keywords and how they relate to the online world.
We will cover, keywords and keyword phrases in
regards to organic search engine optimization.
So What's a Keyword?
A keyword can be any word and is the word used to
describe what someone might type into a search engine to find a web site or
specific information. Logically then, a "keyword phrase" is the term
given to a string of words the searcher is looking for. So while we are talking
about what people are searching for, let’s look at what the engines are
searching for when you enter your keyword.
This is where some people get confused. Firstly I
will tell you what search engines DON’T DO. They do not read a page and
understand what they are seeing. Search engines can not think.
Let’s look at a couple of examples. Let's say you
have typed the search phrase "ground pepper" into Google. Google
would then look through content seeking out the words "ground pepper"
A search engine might view a paragraph on a site like this:
text text text ground pepper text text text text text text ground
pepper text text text text text text text text text text text text text ground
pepper text text text text text text cheese text text text text text ground
text text pepper text text text text text text
Now, let's say you've typed in the phrase "cheese
slices" as your search term. Google could read the exact same paragraph
this way:
text text text ground pepper
text text text text text text ground
pepper text text text text text text text text text text text text text ground pepper text text text text text
text cheese slices text text text
text text ground text text pepper text text text text text text
In the second example of the same sample text, the
search engine wasn't looking for "ground pepper" it was looking for
"cheese slices." So within the same website and text content search engines
can differentiate words but not understand them.
Search engine spiders can look at how often this
keyword appears on the site (and where it appears on the site) and use that as
an indication of how relevant the site is to the keyword or phrase. Now things
obviously get more complicated than that, but it IS the basic idea of how a
search engine finds keywords on your web site.
Search engines simply look to match up strings of
letters against other strings of letters while us humans call them
"keywords." : )
I hope that helps to give you a basic understanding
of keywords and how they are searched by us and the search engines.
