Golden Age of Comics

Archie

Archie Andrews of Riverdale High first appeared in Pep Comics in December 1941. Pep Comics was mostly filled with superheroes such as the Shield, the Comet and the Hangman. The comic book was produced by M.L.J. Magazines.

John Goldwater, the J. in M.L.J., had the idea of adding an ordinary teenager to Pep Comics. 21-year-old Bob Montana was working for M.L.J. and worked on the first stories. Vic Bloom wrote and Montana drew the first issue of Archie, November, 1942. Montana became the principal artist for Archie and his friends drawing both the daily and Sunday Archie strip over the next 35 years.

Accident-prone, redheaded 17-year-old Archie goes crazy when he sees an attractive girl, but his two main crushes are Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper. As the lead singer of The Archies, Archie performs with Betty and Veronica, as well as his rival Reggie, and best friend Jughead.

M.L.J. Magazines having phased out most of its superheroes changed its name to Archie Publications in 1946 and continues to publish Archie Comics.
