The Flash
The Flash was created by by writer Gardner Fox and artist Harry Lampert and first appeared in Flash Comics January 1940. The Flash was "The Fastest Man Alive!" with his speed acquired through accidentally inhaling radiated water vapor in a science lab. Taking the Greek god Mercury as his role model, the Flash had a winged helmet, winged boots, a skin-tight red top adorned with a yellow flash, and blue tights also emblazoned with a few flashes.
Named Jay Garrick, the Flash was a charter member of the Justice Society of America that ran in ran in All Star Comics. Flash comics were cancelled in 1949.
Three additional characters have each gained the power of "super-speed". The later characters called the Flash were named Barry Allen (1956), Wally West (1986), and Bart Allen (2006). All four characters continue to be published by DC Comics. There have also been Flach characters that have lived either on other parallel worlds, or in the future.
