Golden Age of Comics

Kid Colt Outlaw

Kid Colt is the longest-running cowboy star in American comic-book publishing, featured in stories for a 31-year stretch from 19481979 in 229 issues.

Kid Colt and his horse Steel first appeared in Kid Colt #1 (August 1948), from Marvel predecessor Timely Comics. Originally his cover logo was subtitled "Hero of the West" but by issue three this was changed to "Outlaw". Blaine 'Kid' Colt was forced to become an outlaw after being framed for a crime he didn't commit. Although a fugitive from the law, a common theme in the comic-books have him engaging in heroic good acts in an effort to restore his reputation.

Western comics became popular in the years immediately following World War II. Marvel Comics and its forerunners Timely Comics and Atlas Comics was the most prolific publisher of Western comics. As well as Kid Colt other notable long-running titles, included Rawhide Kid, Two-Gun Kid, and Wild Western.

Golden Age of Comics

Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman's first appearance took place in All Star Comics in 1941. Her success was strong enough that she was made the lead story in the new Sensation Comics in January 1942. In the summer of 1942, Wonder Woman was given her own comic, but she appeared frequently in Comic Cavalcade as well. Since then, the Wonder Woman title has been published by DC Comics almost continuously except for a brief hiatus in 1986.

Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston (1893-1947) who received a Ph.D. in Psychology from Harvard University. DC Comics publisher Max Gaines hired Marston as an Educational Consultant. Marston wrote the first Wonder Woman comic which was drawn by Harry G. Peter. Marston had intended the character be called "Suprema" but editor Sheldon Mayer replaced that name with "Wonder Woman."
