Quantum Theology by Diarmuid O'Murchu
Quantum Theology by Diarmuid O'Murchu

No matter how limited your reading of theology or knowledge of physics, don't allow yourself to be daunted by the title. Quantum Theology: Spiritual Implications of the New Physics by Diarmuid O'Murchu provides a wonderful introduction to both the meaning of theology and of quantum theory.

Quantum Theology explores the mystery and meaning inherent in the most ingenious scientific discovery of our time - the quantum theory. In a quantum universe, nothing is predictable. It challenges those who view life as being in any way determined.

This book invites us to outgrow the limited horizons of conventional understanding - in both science and religion. We must challenge those assumptions, no matter how well they may have served us in the past.

O'Murchu regards spirituality as our search for meaning, and theology as the body of wisdom that explores this search. As such, theology has a great deal more in common with spirituality than with religion. Theological explorations of ultimate meaning reflect our human condition and world view. Too frequently, instead of encouraging our quest for meaning, our religions have adopted theologies to suppress that search.

Diarmuid O'Murchu is a priest and social psychologist who devotes nine months of the year serving in a shelter for the homeless in London, England. He spends the other three months travelling internationally as a lecturer, writer and retreat leader. O'Murchu invites us to expand our mystical vision. Like quantum theory itself, he provides an explosion of ideas to extend our scientific and mystical horizons and to challenge the status quo.

Some readers may find O'Murchu's circuitous and diffractive thinking difficult to follow. Others, looking for a set of answers, will be disappointed. He assists us by offering questions at the end of each chapter for individual reflection and for group discussion.
