Jakub Kindl

Defenceman Jakub Kindl was drafted in the first round (19th overall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2005 NHL Draft.

Kindl was born February 10, 1987 in Sumperk, Czechoslovakia. He went to Canada as a 17-year-old and played for the Kitchener Rangers of the OHL for 3 seasons. He then played 3 seasons for the Red Wing's AHL affiliate, Grand Rapids Griffins.

Kindl made his NHL debut with the Red Wings during the 2009-10 NHL season. Called up as an injury replacement, he eventually appeared in 3 games before returning to Grand Rapids. In the 2010-1011 season, Kindl played 48 games for Detroit and scored his first NHL goal against the St. Louis Blues' goaltender Jaroslav Halak on January 20, 2011. He is currently the youngest defenceman in the Red Wings line-up.

Detroit Red Wings Owner

Mike Ilitch has been owner of the Red Wings since 1982. Born in 1929, he founded Little Caesars Pizza and since 1992 has also been owner of baseball's Detroit Tigers. As of March 2011, his family's holdings are estimated to be worth US $ 1.7 billion.

At the time of the purchase, the Red Wings were known as the "Dead Wings" and interest in hockey in Detroit was at an all-time low. Since, it has won fifteen divisional championships, six President’s Trophies (for the season best record among all NHL teams), six Campbell Bowls and four Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008.

Ilitch was inducted as a builder into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2003. Previous owners, James E. Norris (owner 1932–1952) was inducted in 1958 and Bruce Norris (owner 1955–1982) was inducted in 1969.

Sid Abel

Centre Sid Abel's no. 12 was retired by the Red Wings on April 29, 1995. He played 12 seasons for the Detroit Red Wings from the 1938–39 season until the 1951–52 season and was a member of three winning Stanley Cups in 1943, 1950, and 1952. Starting in 1947 he centered the 'Production Line' between Gordie Howe and and Ted Lindsay. Abel won the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP in 1949.

Sid Abel was traded from the Red Wings to the Black Hawks in 1952–53, where he served as a player-coach for the next two seasons. He became Detroit's head coach in 1958 and guided the Red Wings to four Stanley Cup Finals from 1961 to 1966. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969.

Darren Helm

The Red Wings drafted centre Darren Helm in 2005 in the fifth round (132 overall).

Helm was born in St. Andrews, Manitoba, Canada. He started his junior playing career with the Selkirk Fishermen in Manitoba then went on to the Medicine Hat Tigers in Alberta. In 2007, Helm played for Canada's gold medal winning team in the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.

In 2007–08, Helm started his professional playing career and was assigned by the Red Wings to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

He became a regular for Detroit in the 2009–10 NHL season, as the fourth line centre. Following the season, the Red Wings signed Helm to a two-year contract extension worth $912,500 a year.

NHL Winter Classic

On Monday, the fifth NHL Winter Classic was held at Citizens Bank Park, home of baseball's Philadelphia Phillies. The New York Rangers beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 before a crowd of close to 50,000. The previous Winter Classic games were in Ralph Wilson Stadium, Orchard Park, NY (2008), Wrigley Field, Chicago (2009), Fenway Park, Boston (2010) and Heinz Field, Pittsburgh (2011).

The Red Wings were the visiting team in 2009 when they beat the Chicage Blackhawks 6-4. Detroit will host next year and are expected to play the Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium on the University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor before 100,000 fans.
