The Adoration of the Shepherds by Le Nain
Adoration of the Shepherds by Le Nain

The 3 Le Nain brothers signed their paintings only with the family surname but The Adoration of the Shepherds is believed to be by Louis Le Nain (1593?-1648).   It was purchased in 1962 by the National Gallery, London.

The birth of Jesus was announced by angels to shepherds watching over their flocks, and these shepherds came to Bethlehem where they found Mary and Joseph and the Child lying in a manger. Le Nain used the conventional features of a Nativity; the classical ruins, the ox and the ass but the background is of eastern France where Le Nain was born.

The Nativity with God the Father and the Holy Ghost by Pittoni
The Nativity with God the Father and the Holy Ghost by Pittoni

Giovanni Battista Pittoni (1687-1767) painted The Nativity with God the Father and the Holy Ghost around 1740. It was purchased by the National Gallery, London with the assistance of the National Arts Collection Fund, the Noel Buxton Trust and several donations in 1958.

Painted as an altarpiece for an unknown church, it combines the Nativity with the Trinity. In the 19th century the combination of subjects had been considered distasteful and the upper part with God the Father and the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove had been concealed by overpainting. The picture was cleaned in 1959 restoring it to its original form.

Adoration of the Shepherds by Honthorst
Adoration of the Shepherds by Honthorst

Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656) painted Adoration of the Shepherds in 1622. It is now part of the collection of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne, Germany.

The shepherds, who were the first to come to the child in Bethlehem, are representative of the poor of Palestine, to whom the proclamation of Jesus is first and foremost directed.
