Christmas

Holy Night by Gerard DavidThe New Testament does not mention a birth date for Jesus. The first recorded celebration of Christmas on December 25 was from 336 ad. The date was originally connected with the winter solstice, upon which games were held in the Roman Empire for the glorification of the Sol Invictus, the sun god.

The word Christmas entered the English language sometime around 1050 as the Old English phrase Christes maesse, meaning "festival of Christ." Scholars believe the frequently used shortened form of Christmas—Xmas—may have come into use in the 13th century. The X stands for the Greek letter chi, an abbreviation of Khristos (Christ), and also represents the cross on which Jesus was crucified.

Christmas Is For Children

by Linda Lariscy

People say that Christmas is for children. If the glee on their faces is any indication, it must be true. You, too, may be a bit chipper Christmas morning if there's a child still in you! Yes, I agree that children make Christmas a day to remember.

Christmas is Jesus' birthday. We have heard most of our lives how He was born in a stable, laid in a manger, and wrapped with swaddling clothes. His birth created quite a stir then, and, today, 2000 years later, His birth is still stirring up people. Some people get mad when you say "Merry Christmas" these days. Who would have thought that a child, lying in a manger, would create such conflict?

Maybe this year, the child in you just isn't up for Christmas. Maybe this year, things just don't feel right. Maybe this is your year to experience something far from a fantasy world of elves and letters sent to the North Pole. Is it time for you to experience a new birth, no, not in a stable, but in your heart? If it is, get ready for a stir!

Luke 18:16-17
16 But Jesus called the children to him and said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
17 I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." (NIV)

Ben Stein Email

Ben SteinIn 2005, Ben Stein wrote an article about Christmas and the Holidays. Ben Stein is an American actor, writer, and commentator on political and economic issues.

His article has been added to and widely distributed by email. The email says the remarks were made on CBS Sunday Morning.

In the email his then topical references to Nick and Jessica have been replaced. The email mistakenly says Dr. Benjamin Spook's son committed suicide. The email makes a connection the murder of atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair being murdered with her campaign to remove prayer from schools. O'Hair, her son and granddaughter were kidnapped then murdered by David Roland Waters and 3 others after they forced O'Hair to withdraw $500,000.

The original article and anonymous additions can be read at Ben Stein Commentary
