Christian Paintings by Caravaggio

Sacrifice of Isaac by Caravaggio

The Sacrifice of Isaac was painted by Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1573-1610) in 1603 for Cardinal Maffeo Barberini, the future Pope Urban VIII. It is in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence.

In order to test Abraham, God ordered him to give his son Isaac as a burnt offering. Abraham followed these instructions but was stopped by an angel just before carrying the sacrifice. Seeing the proof of Abraham's faith, God promised Abraham a number of descendants as great as the number of stars in the sky.

The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew by Caravaggio

The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew by Caravaggio

The Calling of Saints Peter and Andrew is thought to have been painted by Caravaggio about 1603-06. It is part of the Royal Collection, London. It was long believed to be a copy of a lost original but in 2006 it was declared an authentic Caravaggio.

Jesus called his first disciples, brothers Simon (Peter) and Andrew, in Galilee by Lake Gennesaret. Jesus metaphorically told the two fishermen that they were ot be fishers of men. The painting shows a young, beardless Christ, leading the two much older-looking brothers.

Judas delivered Jesus to the high priest's guards in the Garden of Gethsemane. Only the first three Gospels speak of Judas' kiss. In the Gospel of John, Judas led the guards to Jesus before he implicated himself by answering "Is me" when the guards asked who they were searching for.
