Saint Stephen

Saint Stephen by Carlo CrivelliSt Stephen the Protomartyr was one of the original seven deacons whom the apostles appointed to look after the organization of the early Christian community in Jerusalem.

Falling afoul of the Hellenistic Jews of Jerusalem because of his eloquent proselytizing, he was brought before the the Jewish court of justice. There he was tried for blasphemy against Moses and God (Acts 6:11) and speaking against the Temple and the Law (Acts 6:13-14). An infuriated mob encouraged by Saul of Tarsus, the future Saint Paul, took him outside the city walls where he was stoned to death. Thus he became the first of the Christian martyrs.

(left) Saint Stephen (1476) by Italian painter Carlo Crivelli (1430?-94?). He is depicted with three stones and the martyrs' palm.

Randy Hofman Sand Sculptures

Randy Hofman Sand SculptureRandy Hofman is an artist and ordained minister.

He creates sand sculptures as an outreach of his ministry. He gives away more than 50,000 booklets of Bible quotes every year to passerby's that are drawn to his work.

The sculptures are preserved by a process of spraying them with a light solution of white glue, but after no more than one week, they dry out, deteriorate and are replaced with new work.

Some more of his sculptures can be seen at

A Sunday School teacher decided to have her young class memorize Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.

Little Rick was excited about the task, but he just couldn't remember the Psalm. After much fruitless practice, he could barely get past the first line.

On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky’s nervous excitement was palpable. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and blurted, "The Lord is my Shepherd, and that's all I need to know."
