Drunk? Your Car wonít allow you drive
Itís Friday night. Youíre just out of an awesome party where you had one too many drinks. You need to get home but your car wonít allow to you drive. This event is not happening in a parallel universe. It will be a reality in the next few years.

The Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety, also called the DADSS program, began in 2008. It is a collective research partnership between the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety (ACTS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The former represents 17 famous automobile manufacturers. The motive of this partnership is to develop alcohol-detection technologies that will prevent the vehicle from being driven by an intoxicated driver. It will stop the driver to drive when his/her blood alcohol concentration (BAC) exceeds the legal limit of 0.08 percent.

Currently, DUI convicted drivers are sometimes asked to attach alcohol-detecting interlock systems to their cars. The present system requires the driver to blow into a tube to determine whether he/she is driving under influence. But, the DADSS technology would be different from the present one. The research team is working on making the system accurate and unobstructed. The main purpose is to prevent accidents rather than taking measures after DUI conviction.

The plan is to test a research vehicle enabled with touch-based and breath-based technology by 2015. The research for the same has been already started. It is taking time because the researchers are facing certain issues like placement of the technology and its durability in harsher environment.

Initially, this technology will be available in high-end new cars and then, slowly be available in less expensive cars.

If this technology succeeds, it will save countless lives. Right now, alcohol is a cause in about 1/3rd of fatal crashes. This rate will definitely come down after implementation of DADSS. It will also reduce DUIs.

Itís Birthday Celebration for the Mustang

After Detroit and Chicago, itís the time of the Big Apple. And, the excitement is palpable among car lovers. There are several new cars and revamped models which will showcase at the New York International Auto Show. But, I am interested in the car that will complete its 50th anniversary this year.

Exactly fifty years ago, Ford introduced the world to Mustang at the New York World's Fair. The car was launched in style at the top of the Empire State Building in 1965. As the building was completed in 1931, its elevators werenít equipped to handle a modern car. And, so, the car was cut into three main sections to fit the elevator.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the car, Ford will imitate the í65 stunt. A prototype of 2015 Ford Mustang will be separated and taken to the observatory on the 86thfloor. The Mustang chief engineer, Dave Pericak, informed ďLike all good craftsmen, our team is measuring twice and cutting once to make sure we can get this Mustang up in the elevators.Ē

It will be reassembled in just about six hours and will be on display for 2 days. You can visit the Empire State Building observation to see the new Mustang convertible from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m., April 16-17.

Not only NY, but other parts of the nation are equally excited for this 50 year old beauty. The Mustang Club of America has organised events at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway from April 17-20. Mustang Serial Number One and the Mustang I Concept Car, which are a permanent at The Henry Ford Museum, will be hitting the road to join the Anniversary Celebration at both the tracks.
