Like Facebook, I think Twitter is a terrific way to keep friends, family and colleagues connected to what you're up to.
I don't believe Twitter has any substantial value as a way to boost search rankings though. I read recently that the major search engines don't even index tweets.
The most enduring and genuine Twitter activity/accounts I've witnessed are from those who talk directly to their followers about relatively average things.
Occasionally, awareness type tweets take off virally or questions can get posed then answered. Ultimately, though, Twitter is a social experience not unlike IM. Attempts to view it as anything more are usually fruitless.
Twitter cracks down on accounts they deem to be used for nothing more than marketing or creating link bait. I've lost no less than 100 followers at a time after Twitter purges "spammers."
So, on the social front Twitter rocks, but on a marketing or an SEO front, Twitter doesn't offer anything substantial. IMHO
